The Appeal of Armenian Community Representatives

We express our indignation with the extermination of the last remained khachkars (cross-stones) in the region of Old Jugha in Nakhichevan, where around a hundred of Azerbaijani soldiers armed with hammers, spades and heavy machines began the destruction of the unique medieval Armenian khachkars, tombs and monuments remained in that part of historical Armenia.

We appeal to the world community to stop this act of vandalism.

While the international community is making efforts to find ways for reconciliation of two nations, the present act of barbarianism sanctioned by the officials in Baku, demonstrates once again, the real intentions of the Azerbaijani government – that is, to finalize the cultural cleansing of Armenian heritage in Azerbaijan.

In 2002, owing to the joint efforts of Armenia and UNESCO, it became possible to stop the extermination of the khachkars of Jugha (Julfa). However, Azerbaijan continues its policy of cultural genocide violating its obligations as a member state of UNESCO.

The khachkars of Jugha (Julfa) are the heritage of Armenian and world civilization placed under the UNESCO and should be protected from such barbarianism.

With the present letter we appeal to the international organizations, representatives and officials, people of all nationalities and races to unite with us and condemn the act of vandalism of the Azerbaijani authorities towards the medieval Armenian Heritage of Jugha (Julfa) in Nakhichevan.

We urge UNESCO and governmental institutions worldwide to act and help to safe the khachkar remnants, and even to transport them to Armenia, if can not be protected from the barbarians.

We also appeal to the sensible part of Azerbaijani society to stop and condemn this act of vandalism.

Aufruf der armenischen Öffentlichkeit in Zusammenhang mit der andauernden Vernichtungspolitik des armenischen Kulturnachlasses in Azerbaijan.

Wir, die Vertreter der armenischen Öffentlichkeit, haben mit tiefstem Schmerz und Empörung die Nachricht über die Zerstörung der letzten Khatschkaren (Kreuzstein) in der Stadt „Staraja Djugha“ in Nahitschewan ( Gebiet im heutigen Azerbajan ) gehört. Ein paar dutzend azerbaijanischer Soldaten, bewaffnet mit Hämmmern, Schaufeln und schwerer Technik haben angefangen die einzigartigen mittelalterlichen armenischen Khachkar, Grabsteine und Denkmäler, die wie durch ein Wunder in diesem kleinem Winkel des historischen Armeniens bis heute überlebt haben, zu zerstören. Da die Khachkare von Djugha(„Djulfa“) zum Weltkulturerbe gehören, sie also nicht nur Denkmäler mit lokale Bedeutung sind und sich unter dem Schutz der UNESCO befinden, appellieren wir an die Weltöffentlichkeit: Helfen Sie, werden Sie aufmerksam auf

diesen Akt des Vandalismus!

Während die Weltöffentlichkeit versucht die zwei verfeindeten Völker zur Versöhnung zu bringen,wurde diese vandalistische Aktion von der Regierung in Baku sanktioniert. Das demonstriert nocheinmal das wahre Vorhaben der azerbaijanischen Regierung, - nämlich die sog.“ethnische Säuberungen“ und Vernichtung jeglicher Spuren des armenischen Kulturlebens in Nahitschewan zu Ende zu bringen. Also, Kulturgenozid und Vernichtung der Überreste der armenischen Zivilisation auf diesem historischen armenischen Gebiet. Azerbaijan führte ähnliche vandalistische Aktionen auch in der Sovietära durch. Im Laufe des 70 jährigen kommunistischen Regimes wurden die armenischen Khachkare massen- weise zerstört und wegtransportiert, - weg von ihren ursprünglichen Orten der Entstehung.. Nach dem Zerfall der Sovietunion wurde Azerbaijan unabhängig und diese Politik wurde fortgesetzt, sogar mit noch grösserem Eifer. Ziel war, armenische Spuren auf jetzigen azerbaijanischen Territorium gänzlich zu löschen. Im Jahr 2002, dank den vereinten Bemühungen der armenischen Regierung und der UNESCO, war es gelungen, den Prozess der Vernichtung der Khachkare von Djugha zu stoppen. Dadurch dass Azerbaijan seine Politik des Kulturgenozids gegen Armenier fortsetzt, verletzt es grob seine Verpflichtungen gegenüber der UNESCO. Sehr beunruhigend ist auch die Tatsache, dass in ganz Azerbaijan sich keine einzige Person zu Wort gemeldet und keine einziger diese Geschehenisse öffentlich kritisiert hat, gar ein Wort darüber gasagtn hat. Keine öffentliche Organisation, keine prominente Person aus Kultur- oder Politikbereich. Solcher Zynismus und Gleichgültigkeit der azerbaijanischen Öffentlichkeit ist schockierend.Unter solchen Umständen, wo alles was

mit Armenien und Armenier zu tun hat, nur Hass weckt, kann keine Rede von Vertrauen zu Azerbaijan und zur azerbaijanischen Öffentlichkeit sein. Und jegliche Aufrufe zur Aussöhnung zwischen zwei Völkern durch „Aktivierung der Volksdiplomatie“ klingen vulgär und zynisch.

Mit diesem Schreiben wenden wir uns an internationale gesellschaftliche Organisationen, an Vertreter der Kultur und Politik, an alle Menschen, egal welcher Nationalität und bitten alle sich gegen diesen Akt des Vandalismus, (der gegen den armenischen mittelalterlichen Friedhof der Stadt Djugha („Djulfa“) in Nahitschewan gerichtet ist), zu aüssern. Wir bitten die UNESCO um Unterstützung bei der Ausfuhr von Überresten der Khachkare nach Armenien, wo sie gesichert und geschützt werden. Wir appellieren auch an die azerbaijanische Kulturöffentlichkeit, diesen Akt des Vandalismus öffentlich zu verurteilen und an die Regierenden des Landes, sofort diese Aktionen zu stoppen.
