How Kim Kardashian and System of a

Down Became Equal Activists for the

Armenian Genocide

By Dale W. Eisinger

Four Armenian-Americans comprise the

GRAMMY-winning, critically and commercially

successful rock band called System of a Down.

One Armenian-American comprises the media

unit called Kim Kardashian, famous for her

beauty, media savvy, and fashion sense.

Recently, she lugged a camera crew, her

husband Kanye West, and i daughter North

to Yerevan, Armenia. On April 24, the band

(SOAD) will play a free, public concert atok

Republic Square, in the same city.

The date, April 24, has a distinction for more

than the media gamut. This is, beyond

comprehension, the exact beginning of the

systematic execution of as many as 1.5

million Armenians, starting in 1915. It is one

of the most studied war crimes in history, the

mass murder that gave us the very term

“genocide.” Around 1943, the Polish lawyer

Raphael Lemkin frankensteined the word from

the Greek genos , for “race” or “tribe,” and the

Latin cide, for “killing,” to describe the legal

parameters of “the destruction of a nation or

an ethnic group.” The System of a Down

concert, the band’s 2015 #WAKEUPTHESOULS

tour, and Kardashian’s visit, all coincide with

the 100th anniversary of this travesty

perpetrated by Ottoman Turks. Metal bands

and reality TV stars: the cross-cultural

ambassadors of today.

In a recent NPR interview, System of a Down

singer Serj Tankian talked about his

grandparents, who escaped the genocide

because of extraordinary circumstances . “It’s

these incredible tragic stories that we’ve

grown up with,” Tankian said. “Some people

call it political. Sure, there’s many political

aspects to it. But, because all four members of

the band are Armenian-Americans, it’s

personal.”

As for Kardashian’s typically blessed fashion,

The Daily Mail claims her Armenian ancestors,

under the name Kardaschoffs, escaped thanks

to a warning from a prophet.

Today lets all stand together & remember

the 1.5 million people who were massacred

in the Armenian Genocide. April 24th, 1915.

@KimKardashian

We occasionally bristle at celebrities stumping

for a cause célèbre. With the advent of the

Star Activist, a light public eye-rolling occurs

when advocacy swallows a conversation that,

moments before, revolved around a reality

spin-off series or a political prog-metal

album. Bono particularly comes to mind for

receiving backlash for boosterism but, then

again, Larry King would let you say just about

anything on TV back in the day, as long as it

got the eyeballs on the screen. The cult of

celebrity drives scrutiny, which leads to

skepticism, which leads to scrutiny, on and on.

How can someone who “pretends” (like a TV

star) or “plays” (like a musician) genuinely

relay their passion to a cause as noble and

nuanced as the violence in Darfur, or the

Fukushima nuclear disaster, or the centennial

of the Armenian Holocaust?

Consider the pressure of translating your

passion, unscripted, to an audience of untold

millions. Kim does it on a multi-platform

scale, and does so with candor. System of a

Down does so in a much more articulated

way. Take the 1998 track

“P.L.U.C.K.” (Politically, Lying, Unholy,

Cowardly Killers) from the band’s eponymous

first album. Tankian quite literally calls for

reparations, not an uncommon sentiment for

the band. The liner notes included this before

the track’s listing: “System of a Down would

like to dedicate this song to the memory of

the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian

Genocide, perpetrated by the Turkish

Government in 1915.”

If that dedication passed all but the most

scrupulous fans of System of a Down, it didn’t

generate controversy the likes of The Dixie

Chicks saw for their feather ruffling. Following

the attacks of 9/11, that country band

received death threats for criticizing President

George W. Bush , and still hold fast to their

beliefs today.

But the phenomenon of charity scrutiny has

waned in recent years. Take Emma Watson—

the Brown-educated actress known best for

her role as the wizard Hermione Granger—who

has recently taken to the stage of international

politics , pushing gender equality to the United

Nations. In the age of breathless celebrity

coverage, it’s not whether we know more or

we just think we know more , the issue itself is

catalyst enough. It’s this same age, where Kim

Kardashian is cultural ambassador and

System of a Down named their tour with a

hashtag, where the mere articulation and

visibility of the issue that serves as political

activism. This levels the capitalistic celebrity

with the political metal band, at least in terms

of 21st Century hashtag activism.

Incidentally, Kim Kardashian and System of a

Down are fighting for something that social

media caters directly to: awareness and

recognition, specifically of the Armenian

Genocide. One factor in this battle for official

recognition of the genocide is the spread of

misinformation. When the very powers that be

attempt to instantaneously rewrite history to

their benefit , this is a legitimate

concern. Turkey has yet to acknowledge the

violence as genocide, using the pretext of

World War I as an excuse.

Siding with the ally, the United States has

done the same, even as 43 US states

recognize the genocide. For his part, when

presented with evidence of the holocaust in

1915, then-US Ambassador to the Ottoman

Empire Henry Morgenthau, Sr. recommended

US intervention. He later helped to generate

$100 million, the equivalent of $1 billion

today, by forming the charitable group the

Committee on Armenian Atrocities. He wrote a

book called The Murder of a Nation

concerning the issue. The US government

refused to intervene, for political stratagem.

To this day, the US has not officially used

language to recognize the Armenian slaughter

as a genocide , even as the increasingly

progressive Vatican and the European

Parliament concede to the term .

gettyimages-468777646.jpg?w=900&h=672

Yet the media still takes pot shots at

Kardashian. A recent Page Six headline read,

“Kim K. to visit Armenia, but not to honor

genocide centennial.” In that piece, totally

contrary to the title, Phil Walotsky, a

spokesperson for the Armenian Genocide

Centennial Committee of America, said: “I

think it makes a lot of sense for anyone who

is Armenian to want to connect with their

roots and travel back there, whether they are

famous or not. Especially in light of this

anniversary.” In another pointlessly barbed

and conservative op-ed for Al Jazeera , Belen

Fernandez criticizes Kardashian for not only

exploiting the genocide, but also for not using

the word genocide to exploit it. Then, she

cites a photo from Kardashian’s Instagram —

the most-followed account on Instagram —

wherein Kardashian actually does use the

word genocide.

At the bottom of her piece for Al Jazeera,

Fernandez writes:

Some might ask: So what if we require

glamorous elite guidance to care about the

world and its inhabitants? The ends justify the

means. But if the means entail converting

every aspect of existence into a commodity,

PR effort, and marketing scheme, perhaps

we’re better off not knowing how it all ends.

Does she not realize that her very own

livelihood, at the moment of her writing,

depends on the exploitation of this atrocity?

Her job as a columnist depends on generating

opinions not only about the Armenian

Genocide, but also Kim Kardashian. No one

gets mad at my Nana when she takes flowers

to the cemetery on Memorial Day.

In music, this advocacy means employing the

poetries of violence and aggression to start

conversations of love, hope, and equality.

That’s what System of a Down’s been doing

since their origins in the early ‘90s. The

political machinations have been baked into

the band since the beginning. Tankian has

used boilerplate social justice terms since

“Prison Song,” the first song on their first

album: “All research and successful drug

policy show that treatment should be

increased /and law enforcement decreased

while abolishing mandatory minimum

sentences,” he yells. Other artists have been

breaking similar barriers since the political

climate began fomenting around #Occupy in

2012 .

Further proof is in 2013’s best album, Yeezus,

by none other than Kim’s husband Kanye.

When he performed at a free, public concert in

Yerevan on April 13, he was swamped by fans

after jumping into Swan Lake. Then, the police

shut down the increasingly rowdy show. That

was the last event of Kardashian’s press tour;

she announced the concert on her twitter.

Earlier that day, the family went to Jerusalem

to have the child baptized, in the Armenian

Quarter . There, the Wests were swarmed by

admirers to the point of discomfort on Kim’s

part. A part of me wants to be critical of such

massive stars. Another part of me thinks these

facts read as poetry.

Unfortunately, until this Republic Square show,

System of a Down has not been one of the

most politically relevant artists; they’ve been

inactive for the better part of the last decade.

But take a look at a recent, top comment on

the million-viewed YouTube of “P.L.U.C.K.” :

“When I was in an [Advanced Placement] U.S.

history class, my teacher was asking all of us

if we knew of any genocides, and everyone was

sharing things about the Holocaust and

whatnot, and I couldn’t help but remember

this song and System of a Down. So I shared

about the Armenian Genocide and my

teacher’s response was,”Wow, not many

people share that one. Yes, Ottomans

slaughtered Armenians. Are you Armenian?”

And then, after I’d replied no, I wasn’t

Armenian, I realized how sad it was that a

population as a whole could forget a genocide

like this not 100 years after it happened. And I

realize it’s bands and music like this that

helps keep voices and history alive.” [edited

for punctuation.]

It’s also people like Kim Kardashian and

Kanye West. When System of a Down plays

Republic Square—on such a grand occasion, in

such an inclusive manner, at the cost of zero

dollars to the body public to attend—how will

the politically charged event go off? Will it

resemble another metal band’s outing , to a

nation on the verge of political enlightenment?

Will it spasm out of control like Kanye’s

appearance? At this point, on such a massive

and visible scale, he’s the opening act. The

fuse is lit. The powder keg is ready to explode.

System of a Down has sold about 40 million

albums. But their Twitter followers? Just

topping 1 million. As for Kardashian, she’s the

one with the real tally, mobilizing her forces in

the tens of millions. Her Twitter followers

plateau at over 31M. That’s more than ten

times the population of Armenia. But Kim’s

acolytes dot the globe. If we are to generate

awareness of this Crime Against Humanity, in

order to save the unresolved issue from the

annals of history, each of Kardashian’s

some-50 million admirers have been

impressed with the knowledge that this

happened. That’s a massive amplification of

the untold scores lost in the Medz Yeghern .

The truth is, either this behavior of advocacy is

purely beneficial or it is purely not. That

includes op-eds of any stripe, metal albums,

and reality shows in this landscape. If

D’Angelo is the Black Messiah and Kanye is

Yeezus, it’s not a stretch to call her Mother

Kardashian.

Kim Kardashian

Today marks the 100 year anniversary of

Armenian Genocide! I am proud to now say I

have been to Armenia. I have seen the

memorials and the people who survived and I

am so proud of how strong the Armenian

people are! I am saddened that still 100 years

later not everyone has recognized that 1.5

million people were murdered. But proud of

the fact that I see change and am happy many

people have started to recognize this

genocide! We won't give up, we will be

recognized by all soon! # NeverForget
