Around 39 cars have been set on fire in various neighborhoods of Istanbul in the past 17 days. While the security forces continue inquiries, the perpetrators have not been nabbed yet

  Instances of arson in various neighborhoods of Istanbul continue to threaten the peace of the city and have perplexed authorities.

   Turkey's prime minister brought the issue before the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) group meeting Monday and said all necessary steps will be taken. Even if terror experts are not in agreement on many aspects of the deeds, they say the actions and perpetrators are related, either directly or indirectly, to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

  A total of 39 cars have been set on fire in various neighborhoods of Istanbul in the past 17 days. While security forces continue inquiries into the arson cases, the perpetrators have not been apprehended yet.

  The events are typical acts of vandalism and it is not possible to view them as terror acts, according to terror expert Dr. Ercan Çitlioğlu. “I see them as individual acts of the young, 17-18-year-old PKK sympathizers who want to prove themselves and draw attention, rather than being organized and conscious acts,” Çitlioğlu said to the Turkish Daily News.

  On the other hand, Nihat Ali Özcan, a researcher at the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV) who has researched terror, said these are actions of PKK members. “The PKK members commit these crimes, it is not me saying this, they said they set alight [the cars],” he said, adding that these actions were learnt during the demonstrations in French suburbs.

  A series of violent demonstrations broke out in French suburbs after October 2005 when two Muslim teenagers were electrocuted while attempting to hide from police.

  These kinds of acts do not necessarily require a central decision, said Özcan, referring to Çitlioğlu's view. Sympathizers could do it too, Özcan said.

  İhsan Bal, head of the International Strategic Research Institution, did not relate the vandalism to the mentality of terror in general but still argued that the events are related to the PKK. “If the actions were only vandalism, they would not continue for such a long time. The systematic nature of the actions proves the presence of a chain of command,” he said, adding that they might be inspired from the incidents in French suburbs.

  Bal also argued that the acts of vandalism were the actions of a psychotic period and are a result of being trapped. “The [PKK] organization is under fire, your suicide bombers are detained and your support is declining. These are depressive acts of revenge. They do not have an organizational or political aim,” he said.

  The saboteurs, whom the media have named after the Emperor Nero, the fifth and last Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty who set all of Rome on fire, go out at night to places with no lighting and security cameras. Witnesses exist for only two of the incidents. Images of the suspects were sketched by the police and distributed. The police force is in a state of alert. Anti-terror, public peace, security and intelligence squads of the Istanbul Police Department are working to guard each street in Istanbul in order to nab the perpetrators, according to news agency reports yesterday.
