Смерть Патаркацишвили взбудоражила весь Тбилиси

В ночь на среду в английском городке Лезерхед близ Лондона на своей вилле на 53-м году скоропостижно скончался известный грузинский бизнесмен, бывший кандидат в президенты Грузии Аркадий (Бадри) Патаркацишвили. По предварительным данным, причиной смерти стал острый сердечный приступ. Однако в Тбилиси не исключают, что смерть бизнесмена могла явиться результатом спецоперации грузинских властей.

Сообщение из Лондона взбудоражило весь Тбилиси. С утра в среду у дома № 29 на улице Грибоедова, где живут две сестры Бадри Патаркацишвили, собрались его сторонники, бывшие сотрудники предвыборного штаба, лидеры объединенной оппозиции, которых опальный бизнесмен, не скупясь, поддерживал финансово.

Поначалу их комментарии ограничивались заявлениями, смысл которых сводился к тому, что надо, мол, подождать официального заключения английских медиков и сотрудников Скотленд-Ярда. Как сказал журналистам один из руководителей предвыборного штаба опального бизнесмена, которого власти Грузии в январе объявили в международный розыск по обвинению в подготовке государственного переворота, Рати Шартава, «Патаркацишвили в последнее время сильно переживал из-за событий, которые происходят в Грузии». «Думаю, это и стало причиной смерти», – сказал Шартава журналистам.

Первой о возможной причастности к смерти бывшего кандидата в президенты грузинских властей там же, у дома на улице Грибоедова, заявила активная сторонница бизнесмена, член его предвыборного штаба, пятикратная чемпионка мира по шахматам Нона Гаприндашвили. «Что ж, теперь власти Грузии могут быть довольны», – жестко заявила она журналистам, входя в дом.

Масла в огонь добавляли сообщения, потоком поступавшие в течение всего вчерашнего дня из Лондона. В частности, как косвенное подтверждение версии о причастности грузинских спецслужб к смерти Патаркацишвили здесь восприняли информацию из полицейского управления английского графства Суррей, где заявили, что считают обстоятельства внезапной смерти грузинского оппозиционера подозрительными. Комментируя эту информацию, один из лидеров объединенной грузинской оппозиции, экс-госминистр по урегулированию конфликтов Георгий Хаиндрава призвал «тщательно разобраться в причинах смерти бывшего кандидата в президенты республики». «На фоне той травли, которая была развязана в отношении Бадри Патаркацишвили в последнее время, особенно после его выступления на ноябрьском митинге оппозиции в Тбилиси, надо тщательно разобраться, что реально произошло в Лондоне», – считает Хаиндрава. Он отметил, что знал Патаркацишвили со школьной скамьи и тот никогда не жаловался на проблемы с сердцем. Хаиндрава считает, что смерть Патаркацишвили стала «серьезной утратой для грузинского общества, так как он очень много сделал для этой страны». «В ближайшие дни грузинский народ продемонстрирует, как он относится к этому», – сказал Хаиндрава, дав тем самым понять, что о загадочной смерти Патаркацишвили будет идти речь на митинге в центре Тбилиси, который оппозиция планирует организовать в ближайшую пятницу.

Сомнений в том, что Бадри Патаркацишвили был убит, нет у лидера оппозиционного политического движения «Надежда» Ирины Саришвили-Чантурия, которая тоже принимала участие в январских президентских выборах, но в итоге заняла последнее, седьмое место. «Думаю, что Патаркацишвили умер насильственной смертью. Его смерть устраивала власти Грузии», – сказала она «НГ». Саришвили-Чантурия считает, что заказ на устранение одного из активнейших противников президента Саакашвили «был выполнен кем-то из близкого окружения Патаркацишвили». «Власти знали, что он собирался приехать в Грузию, активно включиться в политику и он мог бы заговорить. А знал Патаркацишвили много, что не устраивало власть», – полагает экс-кандидат в президенты Грузии Ирина Саришвили-Чантурия. По ее словам, она была знакома с Патаркацишвили, и тот всегда следил за своим здоровьем. «От него не ускользнули бы ни малейшие проблемы с сердцем. У него были все возможности следить за своим здоровьем, чтобы внезапно не умереть от сердечного приступа», – считает лидер «Надежды».

В официальных кругах подобные версии называют бредовыми. «Спекулировать подобными темами недопустимо», – заявил журналистам один из лидеров пропрезидентского парламентского большинства Георгий Бокерия. При этом представители грузинских властей заявили, что не будут препятствовать захоронению Бадри Патаркацишвили на родине, если решение об этом примет семья покойного.

Бадри Патаркацишвили считался в Грузии одним из наиболее влиятельных политических противников нынешних властей. Ушедший пару лет назад в оппозицию, олигарх поддержал ноябрьские выступления противников президента Саакашвили, ради чего даже прилетал на несколько часов в Тбилиси. Патаркацишвили баллотировался в президенты Грузии на досрочных январских выборах, однако, получив 7,1% голосов избирателей, занял в итоге лишь третье место. Вскоре после выборов Генпрокуратура Грузии обвинила Патаркацишвили в подготовке государственного переворота и объявила его в международный розыск.

Police study Georgia mogul death

British police have referred the death of Georgian tycoon and opposition politician Badri Patarkatsishvili to a crimes investigation unit for scrutiny.

They say they are treating the death as "suspicious", but add this is standard procedure with any sudden death.

Aides of the 52-year-old, who died on Tuesday in Surrey, say he had a heart attack.

Mr Patarkatsishvili was charged with plotting a coup after protests last year, and stood in recent elections.

Since being charged, Mr Patarkatsishvili had lived in self-imposed exile in Britain and Israel.

The multi-millionaire businessman was one of Georgia's richest and most controversial men, the BBC's security correspondent Gordon Corera says.

He was deeply involved in the murky world of Georgian politics and had recently spoken of fears of a plot to murder him.

For these reasons, close attention will be paid to the investigation into his death, our correspondent says.

Post-mortem examination

However, after an initial examination police experts said there was no trace of any radioactive substance in his body.

That may assuage any fears that Britain has seen a repeat of the murder of former Russian KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko in November 2006.

"Police were called to an address in Leatherhead in Surrey late yesterday evening (around 2300 GMT) following the collapse and death of a Georgian businessman, Badri Patarkatsishvili who is believed to have been 52," British police said in a statement.

"As with all unexpected deaths it is being treated as suspicious. A post-mortem will be held later today [Wednesday] to establish the cause of death," it said.

The results of the post-mortem examination were not expected to be conclusive, however, and further toxicology tests will be carried out.

Surrey police later confirmed they had referred the death to their Major Crimes Investigations Unit.

Mr Patarkatsishvili's former business associate, exiled Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky, said he had seen him that day.

He was not ill but had complained about his heart, he said.

"The death of Badri Patarkatsishvili is a terrible tragedy," he said in a statement. "I have lost my closest friend."

"This is a huge loss for all of his family and friends."

Mr Berezovsky said he would make no further comment on the circumstances of Mr Patarkatsishvili's death until the authorities had completed their investigation

'Assassination plot'

A supporter of the so-called Rose Revolution which brought Mikhail Saakashvili to power in 2004, Mr Patarkatsishvili later turned against the government and began financing opposition parties.

The authorities accused him of offering a $100m (£50m) bribe to a senior police official to help him overthrow the government and seize the Georgian interior minister.

He denied the charge, saying that he himself was being targeted in an assassination plot.

He challenged Mr Saakashvili in presidential elections last month, but could not prevent his re-election.

The main opposition tried to distance itself from Mr Patarkatsishvili's self-financed election campaign, and he came third with just 7% of the vote behind their official candidate Levan Gachechiladze.

Mr Patarkatsishvili co-owned Georgia's popular Imedi TV station with Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.

Mr Saakashvili pulled the plug on Imedi - the main outlet for opposition views - amid a brief period of emergency rule last November that saw troops tear-gas protesters in Tbilisi.

The tycoon made his fortune in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Georgian tycoon death 'natural'

An exiled Georgian billionaire who had spoken of assassination fears died of natural causes, according to initial post-mortem tests, Surrey police said.

Police were treating the death of Badri Patarkatsishvili, 52, as "suspicious", which is standard with sudden deaths.

Toxicology tests are yet to be carried out on the tycoon, who died on Tuesday at his mansion in Leatherhead, Surrey.

He was charged with plotting a coup in Georgia after protests last year and stood in recent elections.

Since being charged, Mr Patarkatsishvili had lived in self-imposed exile in Britain and Israel

Litvinenko fears

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said there was "no indication that the sudden death of Badri Patarkatsishvili was from anything other than natural causes".

She said: "Extensive toxicology testing is yet to be carried out. This will take a number of weeks."

There had been fears that Britain has seen a repeat of the murder of former Russian KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko in November 2006.

Mr Patarkatsishvili spoke recently of his fears for his life after an alleged plot to murder him in London was uncovered, and one reported plan bore similarities to the murder of Mr Litvinenko.

The multi-millionaire businessman was one of Georgia's richest and most controversial men, the BBC's security correspondent Gordon Corera said.

He was deeply involved in the murky world of Georgian politics and had recently spoken of fears of a plot to murder him.

'Outspoken partner'

Mr Patarkatsishvili had been a long-time business partner of Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky, an outspoken Kremlin critic who now lives in exile in London.

The tycoon spent Tuesday in meetings in London, and one person who saw him said there had been "no evidence" the businessman was unwell.

Mr Patarkatsishvili left London at 1900 GMT on that day and returned to his home.

The businessman was with close family members and other unidentified people when he collapsed and died at about 2300 GMT.

An inquest into Mr Patarkatsishvili's death will open on Friday at Woking Coroners Court.

Plotters discuss Badri Patarkatsishvili's murder

Extract from a conversation allegedly recorded covertly between a Georgian official and a Chechen warlord discussing the assassination of Badri Patarkatsishvili, June 2006:

Georgian official:Honestly, as I have spoken to you, I have learned a lot from you, and I want your advice what to do and how to solve this problem.

This person rules in the interests of Russia, but pretends that as if he quarrels with Russia, that's normal. Now they have disrupted the attention, he prepares a coup d'etat, he finances everything, he calls mass meetings against the government. But in reality he was ordered to be ready to move by autumn. We have information that the power of control was given to this person. We want him. He is a very serious person, very influential.

Chechen: Is it Georgadze?

Georgian official: No, somebody else who is now in Georgia. Georgadze is only a well- known person, nothing else. It's only to distract the attention of people. But this person is for real, he takes real steps to recreate anarchy in Georgia, to create and mediate in Georgia.

He is a very serious person. He pretends to be a Georgian patriot. Georgadze is doing the legwork, but him, that's different. He was in the shadows but now he is in the spotlight and he openly says - I am in the opposition and I shall move the country to the line acceptable both to Russia and the West. He threatens Russia and he threatens the West at the same time and gets money from both sources. He has made a fortune, a great fortune in Russia.

Chechen: Is it the person who bought vehicles for the Interior Ministry?

Georgian official:Yeah, he's the one.

Chechen: He is the one whom Berezovsky paid a visit?

Georgian official:Yes, but I don't want to say it directly. You will have to decide.

Chechen:He wants to demonstrate that he is a friend of everyone, he is Badri Patarkatsishvili.

Georgian official:It isn't possible for one person to have so much money that he can shower anyone with gold. I mean the people in opposition. I'm not saying he's an ideal person, but me, being so close to him, I can see that he is at loss. He doesn't know what to do. On one hand he wants to do everything by himself, he is very stubborn, and he is not willing to relinquish any of his powers. He is under pressure from all sides, he has bribed and bought everyone, except one person, and he slanders him 24/7, he slanders and pours dirt not only on him, me and my boss, I mean everyone. He sent me here… he pours dirt on everyone capable of independent thinking.

So the problem is political, really. If we are talking about one person, then this is not a problem. We can deal with him, even if he is guarded by hundreds of bodyguards. We can wipe out his guards. But here we are facing another problem. We don't want to do it abroad as to avoid suspicion being laid at Georgia's door. Georgia is now trying to stand on its own feet, it is getting investments, the country can not do without money. We don't want to take blame for something that will lead the world to think that Georgia is again involved in murders, explosions, kidnappings. That's why I have called you.

This person often visits London, a couple of weeks a month he is in London, another fortnight in Israel. So, I didn't want to do it over there, as this is nearly impossible. So we have thought that as long as he doesn't live in our land it's better to forget about everything, although this is an enemy, whether in Georgia or abroad. The point is however that we are being constantly monitored and he has created a state in the state. He has more money then the state budget of Georgia. He has open accessible accounts in Russia and he can take as much as he wants. He has created over there his own system and has his own Ministry of Security ...

If any information from our conversation is leaked, I shall be...well, you know. We are just having a chat now, when I go back, perhaps there will be more news. But here, neither me, and moreover the state, have nothing to lose because he will bring back what we have been trying to get for a long time, step by step. There is money allocated for this problem. A lot of money, as much as one needs. I and another man back in Georgia are interested in how to do it professionally, because if this is to happen there will be a lot of commotion. The Americans will get involved, an investigation will be started.

All we want is for him to disappear, forever, with all his immediate entourage. It's difficult for me to explain everything right here. He spends summers at the Black Sea, he has a huge castle over there. He also has his own yachts. So it's better to come over there and have a good look at the spot. He has bought a lot of property in Batumi area, he has his private plane and helicopter. So here we can have a number of options. When he travels from Tbilisi to Batumi, he travels by plane. So we can work out a professional plan as not to leave any traces. Whoever will do it we want to explain to Georgian people that it was done by Moscow. He has now allocated $US500,000 for the war in South Osetia. He says that he has given $500,000 for the Army to fight in South Osetia so this is a good excuse that we can give the people. It is very important to present it this way.

Chechen: So, as we all know - if there is man, there is a problem. No man - no problem. The problem is how reliable are your partners. If this is a matter of state importance, then the fate of the state is in our hands. That's what I understand from your short story. So, if this is a matter of state importance, I need to arrange a meeting.

Georgian official:That's why I came here, to arrange such a meeting, you do understand?

Chechen:Yes, I do.

Georgian official:On the other hand I shouldn't even mention names, however I couldn't hide this from you.

Chechen: I must simply hint, just a hint. I myself know bloody well all your members of opposition, all these arseholes, all these scumbags. I know them as well as I know our own bastards, as I have spent 18 months in Georgia. I first expressed interest in politics in 1977, and I follow these scum very carefully. I'm well aware of every step they take. Especially I'm interested in Georgia. Before the second Chechen war, I have managed to convince at a meeting one of our influential warlords … that Georgia is the only country that is our brother and our friend.

Оппозиция Грузии: Миша, мы пришли!

Акция протеста объединенной оппозиции Грузии, которая проходит сейчас перед зданием парламента в Тбилиси, минутой молчания почтила память бизнесмена и оппозиционного политика Бадри Патаркацишвили.

Затем лидеры оппозиции обозначили суть своих требований к властям, напомнив, что всего их – 17. «Миша, мы пришли!», - провозгласил лидер оппозиции и основной конкурент Михаила Саакашвили на выборах президента Грузии 5 января Леван Гачечиладзе.

А другой оппозиционный лидер Георгий Тортладзе добавил, что у властей Грузии был шанс исправить все свои ошибки и удовлетворить требования оппозиции, но они этого не сделали. «Поэтому акции будут продолжаться», - заявил он. Другой политик – Звиад Дзидзигури – пояснил: «Мы не можем ждать, когда они (власти – «Росбалт») ворвутся в наши дома и выставят нас оттуда».

К акции объединенной оппозиции присоединились партии, не входящие в ее состав: «Новые правые», Христианско-демократический союз и Лейбористская партия, объявившая сегодня о начале акции национального неповиновения. Движение на проспекте Рутсавели, где проходит акция, перекрыто.
