Armenian duduk virtuoso’s haunting tribute to Dink

I will never forget the day thousands of people gathered in the streets of İstanbul crying, "We are all Hrant Dink" while walking to his funeral.

Everyone's sadness and shock at the evil act of his murder and the loss of this beautiful person was voiced by the duduk (an Armenian wind instrument widely used in folk music), unmistakably playing "Sarı Gelin," an Erzurum folksong. "Veda" (Farewell) is an album dedicated to the memory of Dink by Suren Asatryan, who played to our hearts on that day as he does now. The album's title is also the title of an original song composed by Asatryan as an ode to Dink.

Many of us remember Asatryan's unique sound on the duduk from Group Yansımalar's album "Vuslat" (Reunion), where he performed alongside Şenol Filiz and Birol Yayla. The duduk, one of the best-known traditional instruments of Armenia, takes its name from the word "düdük" (pipe) in Turkish. It is impossible to mistake the deep, hollow sound of the duduk for that of any other wind instrument. Asatryan has a special role among the duduk performers of the world with his own tone and unique timber. Also a clarinetist, Asatryan has developed a technique that causes the duduk to make a louder sound than normal.

This is Asatryan's fifth album in Turkey. He is a student of Vaçe Hosapyan in Armenia, and he has taken part in numerous projects in Armenia throughout his 14-year career in music. His first project in Turkey was "Vuslat." In his second album titled "Bir Ömür Sadece" (Only One Lifetime) he was accompanied by such musicians as Erkan Oğur, Derya Türkan and Şükrü Kabacı. His third and fourth albums were "Seneler" (Years) and "Horovel."

In "Veda" traditional instruments such as the didgeridoo, sitar and garmon are used as well as the violin, kemençe, bass duduk and saxophone. There are 10 tracks on the album, most of which are compositions from Armenian composers and traditional songs. There is "Can Baba" in Şustar mode, composed by Aşık Aşot, which is a fine example of the aşık (bard) tradition in Armenian music. It is performed by Asatryan on an electronic background of rhythmic and sound patterns simulating the tabla and sitar. It is an interesting combination and can be observed in many songs throughout the album, which arranger Murat Kağan Ergün, who also performs on the guitar and sitar in the album, took care to emphasize. As the phenomenon of "world music" suggests, there is some melting point where many sounds of diverse instruments from all over the world and electronic music somehow merge, almost inevitably, and it is up to the arranger or the musician to make this fusion as harmonious and pleasant as possible. In Asatryan's album the element of fusion does not overpower the distinctively Armenian sound, which has pagan ritual, Christian church music and the aşık tradition (forming the basis of traditional singing and story telling in Armenia and eastern Anatolia) at its origins.

The saddening sounds of the duduk through Asatryan's unique performance in "Veda" accompanies our mourning for Dink, and as art always does, it elevates the emotion to a place where it becomes an unforgettable part of our past each time we hear this particular sound somewhere in the background.
