First prize winner of the prestigious Plácido Domingo "Operalia" Competition in 2000 and a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee medal, Canadian Armenian soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian made an impressive series of appearances in the 2003/2004 season,

including return engagements at Chicago Lyric Opera and Los Angeles Opera as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, and at the Metropolitan Opera as Teresa in Benvenuto Cellini. She made a critically acclaimed debut at San Diego Opera as Leila in Les Pêcheurs de Perles and performed recitals and concerts in Toronto with Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Tafelmusik (a program of Cleopatra arias, which was recorded for her 3rd CD with CBC Records), Vancouver, New York, Minnesota, Atlanta and San Francisco.

Miss Bayrakdarian's other recent North American performances have included Catherine in A View from the Bridge at the Metropolitan Opera, Clorinda in Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda at Los Angeles Opera, Servilia in La Clemenza di Tito with Santa Fe Opera, Valencienne in The Merry Widow at the San Francisco Opera, and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte with the Cincinnati Opera. At the Lyric Opera of Chicago she appeared as Catherine in the World Premiere of William Bolcom's A View from the Bridge, as well as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. For the Canadian Opera Company, she has sung the roles of Cleopatra in Handel's Giulio Cesare, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

In Europe Miss Bayrakdarian made her Italian debut at Milan's Teatro alla Scala in Bernstein's West Side Story, sang Romilda in Handel's Serse at the Opéra de Montpellier and the Dresden Semperoper, Cleopatra in Hasse's Marc'Antonio e Cleopatra at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Emilia in Handel's Flavio at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, Germany, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Paris Opera (Bastille), Zerlina in Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival, and Elisa in Il Re Pastore at Brussel's Theatre de la Monnaie.

In addition to her recital work, Miss Bayrakdarian has an extensive concert repertoire. In June 2004 she performed, and later recorded, Mahler 8th Symphony with the San Francisco Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas, which will be released in the fall of 2004. She has also sung Mahler 4th Symphony with the Pittsburgh Symphony conducted by Mariss Jansons, Messiah with Les Violons du Roy, Brahms Requiem with Winnipeg Orchestra, Haydn's Nelson Mass, as well as triumphant recitals in New York (Carnegie Hall), Boston, Vancouver, Toronto, Berkeley, Costa Mesa, Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Cyprus.

Miss Bayrakdarian can be heard on the Grammy Award winning soundtrack of the blockbuster movie The Two Towers, the second installment in The Lord of The Rings trilogy, as well as the multiple award-winning Canadian movie Ararat. When Miss Bayrakdarian's debut recording "Joyous Light" was released in March 2002 on the CBC label, it went straight to No. 1 in the classical charts across Canada. She has also recorded Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5 for CBC Television, for which she earned a Gemini nomination, Rachmaninov's Vocalise for Bravo Arts Television. Her second recording with the CBC - a Spanish/South American disc called "Azulão", won the 2004 Classical Album of the Year: Vocal or Choral Performance from the JUNO Awards, Canada's Music Awards.

Miss Bayrakdarian has been the recipient of many grants, including a Canada Council Grant, the Sullivan Foundation Grant, the 2000 Leonie Rysanek Award from the George London Foundation, and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Award in 1997.

Highlights for the 2004/2005 season include Zerlina and Marzelline at the Chicago Lyric Opera, Susanna for the Pittsburgh Opera, Zerlina at the Metropolitan Opera, and concerts and recitals in Montreal, Victoria, Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver, Birmingham (Alabama), Beaver Creek, Washington, and Cologne (Germany).

Сопрано "Метрополитен Опера" прозвучит для карабахцев

24 июля президент Нагорного Карабаха Аркадий Гукасян принял известную канадскую певицу армянского происхождения, солистку "Метрополитен Опера" Изабель Байракдарян (сопрано). Байракдарян является лауреатом многих международных конкурсов.

В ходе беседы певица из Канады сказала, что приехала в Степанакерт, чтобы выступить на карабахской сцене и ознакомить любителей музыкального искусства Нагорного Карабаха с произведениями мировой классики. Она с удовлетворением отметила, что в Карабахе почитают высокое искусство, особенно в среде молодежи. Это, на ее взгляд, свидетельствует о том, что "стремление к прекрасному, которое всегда отличало армянский народ, стало неотъемлемой частью бытия карабахцев, которые смогли сохранить и приумножить лучшие традиции Арцаха по формированию всесторонне развитой личности".

Isabel Bayrakdarian was born in Lebanon (in Zahle, outside of Beirut). The youngest of six children, Bayrakdarian was born into a musical family, with brothers and sisters playing piano and violin. She was known as the little girl with a big voice, and sang in the local church choir with her siblings.

"It was a family affair," she recalled in the Globe and Mail. "I remember my brothers served at the altar, my mom directed the choir, my sisters would sing, and there I would be, half the size of everyone else, just belting it out." This early training in the Armenian Orthodox Church choir helped to develop her musical gifts.

As the youngest, Bayrakdarian's older siblings were both her role models (they were becoming doctors, engineers, and architects) and an audience for her attention-getting antics. Always an overachiever, she began reading classical Armenian poetry at an early age and studied Pride and Prejudice at age nine to keep up with her older sister. She spoke Armenian, the local Arabic dialect, French (learned from her francophone mother, Lalique), and learned English in school.

In 1989, the Bayrakdarians moved from Lebanon to Toronto. Although they arrived with nothing but their suitcases, they had supportive relatives who helped them along. "We were not really poor, but it was difficult adjusting, as it is for all immigrants," she said in the Globe. "But we're a family that helps each other out." They hadn't been in Canada very long when Bayrakdarian's father died. The death drew her family even closer together.

In Toronto, Bayrakdarian had opportunities she may not have had access to in Lebanon. She attended a suburban Catholic high school, played the flute in the band and sang in the choir at St. Mary's Apostolic Church. She graduated with an A+ average in math and sciences, she decided to follow the lead of her siblings.

Choosing to study biomedical engineering at the University of Toronto, Bayrakdarian was headed for a career full of research and laboratories. A self-described math whiz and night owl, she was a typical university student, pulling caffeine-filled all-nighters. She eventually graduated engineering school with an A+ average.

But the high marks came with a price: Bayrakdarian had eschewed all extra-curricular activities to focus on her studies, which left her feeling drained. So, early on in university, she began vocal lessons with singing teacher Jean MacPhail as a means of recharging herself creatively. She had already been developing resilience for performing on stage by standing through her church's formal three-hour services. "It just takes your breath away," MacPhail told the Globe. "She just inhales music. It's a bit death-defying."

By 1997, she was studying under opera coach Stuart Hamilton. Against his judgment, Bayrakdarian entered the ultra competitive Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She won, and singing went from hobby to full-time profession. She had been considering a performing career and winning the Met audition was proof that she could really do it. From there, Bayrakdarian told the Globe, she easily persuaded her family that opera was "a stable profession that had potential for growth."

At the Met's winners' concert, she even wore the traditional iron ring she received as an engineering graduate. "I am probably the first engineer to win the Met auditions," she said, laughing. "Certainly, the first female engineer."
