Juventus rocked by grave loss

Juventus announces the loss of Alessio Ferramosca and Riccardo Neri, two boys from the Berretti (Under-17s) who lost their lives today following an accident at the club’s Vinovo training centre. Investigations by the authorities are currently under way. The club and all its employees join the families of the two seventeen year-olds in mourning.

In light of this tragic loss Juventus asked the Lega Calcio and Cesena for the match to be postponed. The date of the replay will be announced in due course. All official and friendly youth team fixtures scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled.

A last goodbye to Alessio and Riccardo

Over a thousand people gathered at Turin’s Duomo this afternoon to pay their last respects to Alessio Ferramosca and Riccardo Neri.

Joining the boys’ families, friends and team-mates were the entire Juventus family, and together they watched as friends shared their memories of the two boys in a moving service.

One boy dedicated a poem to the team’s captain, Riccardo Neri, an extract of which follows:

“It was you who gave me the strength to be here reading these words and I thank you from the bottom of my heart…Ciao Captain, my Captain”.

Minutes after the final whistle, Didier Deschamps gave his thoughts on Juventus’ first championship defeat of the season. “We knew we had an emergency on our hands but I don’t want to make excuses. Mantova showed more aggression than us and when we don’t match the opposition on a physical level we are obviously going to encounter difficulties. Taking on Mantova at this stadium is certainly not an easy task, and unfortunately we arrived here without a number of players. We have to accept the defeat and react well on Tuesday when we play Cesena at home. This defeat is the slap in the face we needed to wake us up. We’ve made a poor start after the winter break, and we now have to get back on track as soon as possible”.

Lippi: “Del Piero, symbol of Italian football”

“Del Piero is one of the few icons left in Italian football”. Speaking about the Bianconeri captain was Marcello Lippi, in town for the launch of the Salvatore Lo Presti football annual. “Alex is a fine example of professionalism – continued the World Cup winning coach – as he showed this summer, when, right in the thick of the ‘Calciopoli’ scandal, he pledged his allegiance to Juventus without hesitation. He’s a symbol of not only this club, but also of Italian football as a whole”. And on what is to be the captain’s 500th appearance for the club this Saturday. “I don’t know whether that’s a record, but I know the 200 plus goals he’s scored for Juventus certainly are. More than anything else, these records bear witness to just how much he’s done for his team and just how great a champion Alex is, both from a footballing and a human perspective”.

Salihamidzic joins the Bianconeri

Hasan Salihamidzic is a Juventus player: with his contract due to expire, the Bosnian midfielder - currently on the books of Bayern Munich - has signed an agreement which will bring him to Turin in June on a four-year deal.

Born in Jablanica, Bosnia, on the 1st January 1977, Salihamidzic is a flexible wide midfielder: although a left winger out of preference, he is equally effective on the opposite flank. He has made fifteen appearances so far this season, scoring two goals.

Nicknamed “Brazzo”, meaning brother in Bosnian, he has notable international experience and an enviable list of honours: after three consecutive seasons with Hamburg (1995-98), Salihamidzic moved to Bayern Munich where, over nine years, he picked up six Bundesliga titles, four German Cups, three League Cups and, most importantly, the Champions League and Intercontinental Cup in 2001.

Alex, Juve 500 times over

A great party for an immense champion. Before this afternoon’s clash with Bari at the Olimpico, Alessandro Del Piero will be honoured for the latest milestone in his career, 500 appearances in the black and white of Juventus. The club and FIAT will together present the captain with a personalised number plate and a scale model of the new Cinquecento. The presentation is just a prelude to what the captain will receive when it is officially released in mid-September: the keys to the tenth model of the new edition Cinquecento to come off the FIAT production line.

September also marks the fourteenth anniversary of a certain Foggia-Juventus (12th September 1993), a game with a special place in the history books. Not for the score-line, a straight forward 1-1 draw on the 4th day of the championship, but for the debut of a rather promising youngster, a 74th minute substitute for the afternoon’s goal scorer Fabrizio Ravanelli. It was Alessandro Del Piero’s first minute in a Juventus shirt, and the game signalled the beginning of a truly remarkable career.

Since then Alex has become the greatest of all time, smashing every possible record. He’s already the club’s record goal scorer and he now becomes only the third player in history to make 500 appearances for Juventus, edging ever closer to the records of the legendary Gaetano Scirea (552) and Beppe Furino (528).
