On 30 May, the Cabinet approved the resolution regarding the Draft Law on First Names and Surnames of the Republic of Lithuania and the Draft Law Amending Articles 3.282, 3.303 and 3.306 of the Civil Code of the Republic of Lithuania.

The Draft Law stipulates that a document into which a person’s name is entered must preserve the person’s identity officially designated with a name and surname, rather than create a new one. At the same time, the Draft Law defines the possibility for persons whose identity is established in other states to retain their authentic first names and surnames.

A general rule of the Draft Law states that a first name and a surname in the source document written in Lithuanian characters, in personal documents drawn up or issued by a competent authority shall be spelt without any amendments, except for the cases provided for by the Law, which are not applicable to foreign citizens. The Draft Law also stipulates that the first names and surnames spelt in non-Lithuanian characters based on Latin alphabet shall be copied letter-by-letter in Latin characters, while the names and surnames, written in non-Latin characters, shall be rewritten in Lithuanian characters.
