Начну тему вот с такой новости для меня.

Ibrahim Al Junaibi has nurtured a passion for music ever since he discovered the keyboards at the age of 8. But he was discouraged from pursuing his dream because his family deemed it culturally inappropriate and believed there was no future in the music profession. Twenty-four years later, the determined, self-taught Emirati pianist is composing music – and is making his parents proud.

The 32-year-old, who cannot read music but began training six years ago, will be performing in a classical concert organised by the NSO Symphony Orchestra in Abu Dhabi on Saturday and kicking off National Day celebrations. “I started playing the piano in 1999 and it was so much more challenging than the keyboards,” says Al Junaibi.

He says listening to soundtracks from movie and television shows made him curious about the piano and soon he was doing research on the music composers and trying to reproduce the sounds.

“I play by ‘feeling’ the composition,” says the pianist, who works as a public relations officer at an oil company in the capital.

“There is always a meaning in the music. That was how I was learning music – by understanding it. If I heard a classical piece by the great Beethoven, Bach or Mozart, I would first read up on their history and find out the story behind their work. Even now when I play, I feel like I am a character in the story they tried to create through their music.”

Music is on his mind even when he is at work.

“I always listen to music and think about it all the time,” says Al Junaibi, who has a 12-month-old daughter. “I started to learn very late but I do not want to give up.”

Al Junaibi began his musical journey by challenging himself and enrolling in short summer courses in the Czech Republic and Prague.

He now trains with Martin Hrsel, a piano teacher at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Development, and practises for an hour everyday.

“Before, I would touch the keys and hear the same tone. Now, my work is more dynamic and I can play fast and in several genres – classical, baroque, romantic. I know where I need to play high notes and the indicators of timing and tempo are much clearer.”

Al Junaibi has played solo and as part of an orchestra in several local and international concerts in the past few years. “I do not only play the piano but compose and arrange music, too,” he says. “I like to listen to Arabic songs and ‘modify’ them.”

Along with mastering pieces by his favourite composers – Bach and Chopin – Al Junaibi has also created fusion pieces, incorporating waltz and Arabic music. He will be playing Waltzes Fantasy, which he composed two years ago, at the NSO concert this weekend.

“This music is a mix between classic and Arabic,” he says. “I love Austrian music, famous for producing great waltz pieces. Most of my compositions feature waltz. This is a bit different in technique and sound because I have mixed the sounds of the violin with the piano. I like playing classical more than Arabic music. But I compose Arabic music because I know people enjoy it.”

Al Junaibi says he tries to create music that makes the audience feel like the instruments are talking to each other during his seven-minute performance.

“It is just the way they blend and the layers of sound created. I do not like repeating music, so they will hear something new.”

Al Junaibi says he is grateful for the support by government and private organisations in promoting Emirati talent in the performing arts, but stresses the need to hone gifted youngsters.

“The emphasis on arts came about only in 1997, with classical concerts being held in Abu Dhabi. I can see the difference and the progress in the field. It is a big scene now. But I have seen how children are trained from such a young age in other countries. I would like to study how to compose music, but there are no specialised schools here and that is a deterrent for talented children.”
