Kurdish terrorist group suspected in Turkish oil pipeline blast

Istanbul - The outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is suspected of being behind the blowing up of an oil pipeline leading from Iraq to Turkey, Turkish officials said Sunday.

The Saturday blast struck a pipeline that brings oil from the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk to the Turkish port of Ceyhan. The explosion took place near the Turkish city of Midyat and temporarily knocked the pipeline out of service, officials said.

Although mostly dormant in the years following the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, the pipeline has since 2007 been pumping an average of 500,000 barrels of oil per day.

The 960 kilometer (600 mile) pipeline had previously been the target of Iraqi insurgents.

The PKK, considered a terrorist organization by the US and the EU, has stepped up its attacks against Turkish forces in recent months. Some 20 Turkish soldiers have been killed in PKK attacks over the last two weeks.

Three soldiers killed as terrorists attack Şemdinli outpost

Three soldiers were killed and three others injured when outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists attacked a gendarmerie outpost in the Şemdinli district of southeastern Hakkari province early Tuesday, the Hakkari Governor's Office has announced.

Close to 50 terrorists opened fire on the Beyyurdu outpost yesterday morning; the soldiers responded in kind. Three soldiers died while three others were injured in the clash. Additional units were transferred to the region following the attack, and 10 terrorists were killed in a subsequent operation. The three injured soldiers were evacuated to the Hakkari Military Hospital via helicopter. They are reportedly in good condition.

In a separate incident, PKK terrorists carried out another attack on a gendarmerie outpost in the Arıcak district of Elazığ province late on Monday. Six soldiers were injured while a PKK member was killed. The team was reportedly heading to the Bükardı gendarmerie outpost when it was assaulted. The five soldiers were immediately taken to the Elazığ Military Hospital and remain in good condition.

Four other soldiers were also injured on Monday in Çukurca, Hakkari province, when a land mine believed to have been planted by the PKK exploded.

The PKK has stepped up attacks against the military in southeastern Turkey after ending a 14-month cease-fire at the start of June.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which began in 1984 when the PKK took up arms against the state with the aim of creating a separate Kurdish homeland.

Only 25 days remained until slain soldier’s discharge

Grief permeated all corners of the house of Pvt. Mahmut Yalçındağ, one of the three soldiers killed. His family, which resides in the southeastern province of Gaziantep, was shocked at hearing that their son is now dead.

Cemal Yalçındağ, the soldier’s father, strongly condemned terrorism, saying: “This terrorism makes parents suffer. What will this nation’s situation be? Should we not send our sons to the military?” He also said his son’s discharge was just 25 days away, adding that he had spoken with him one day before his death. “He consoled me and said it was not possible for the terrorists to reach their camp. How could I have known that he was going to be shot?” he asked. The father mourned, hugging a commander who came to his house, saying, “Did you discharge him early?” The soldier was one of four children of the Yalçındağ family. His body was to be sent to Gaziantep yesterday evening for the funeral.

Two brothers both fall victim to terror

Another soldier who was killed yesterday by the PKK was Erkan Akdeniz from the eastern province of Iğdır. His brother Mehmet Akdeniz died in 1997 when he stepped on a mine planted by the PKK. He died in the explosion while serving in the military in the Beytüşşebap district of southeastern Şırnak province, the head of the Association of Families of Martyrs and Veterans in Iğdır, Kamber Güzelkaya, said. Akdeniz, a Kurd, is expected to be buried in his hometown of Halfeli.

Kurdish rebels gird for battle

KURDISH rebels are preparing for a sustained military confrontation with the Turkish government following the end of a year-long ceasefire.

The lull had raised hopes of ending the 26-year insurgency.

Speaking from their mountain-top refuge in northern Iraq, the leaders of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) warned of large-scale attacks across Turkey in response to aerial bombardments of its bases in the past few days.

"It's going to be very hot," said Sozdar Avesta, one of the top five commanders of the PKK, describing the military situation in the months ahead. "Guerilla units across Turkey have been activated. We have started a period where we are going to actively defend ourselves."

Last April, the PKK declared a unilateral ceasefire in response to measures proposed by the government to ease restrictions on ethnic Kurds in eastern Turkey. Yet the two sides never built the trust necessary to negotiate an end to hostilities that have killed about 40,000 people.

Regarded as a terrorist organisation by most Western governments, the PKK blames Turkey for the failure of the peace process and alleges that Ankara continued to carry out military operations in the past 14 months.

"The Turkish government has failed to develop a peaceful solution of the Kurdish issue," said Ms Avesta, a member of the PKK for 24 years and the highest-ranking female rebel. "Instead, they have unleashed more violence and are pursuing a policy of annihilation. Our own actions are in response to Turkish repression."

She said the PKK suspected that Turkey was planning a ground offensive that would penetrate deep into northern Iraq, where the guerillas, who are tolerated by the local Iraqi Kurdish government, have been hiding since 1999.

The Turkish government has said the PKK failed to stick to its own ceasefire in recent months and regards strikes against the group as legitimate.

Camped out in remote gorges, PKK leaders appear frustrated by the lack of political progress but are ready to revert to their original role as insurgents. Another PKK member said: "The Turkish government saw our ceasefire as a sign of weakness and is trying to exploit that. They are preparing a total war."

The PKK is stepping up recruitment from Kurdish communities in Turkey, Iraq and Syria. "We are open to accepting more guerillas again now that the no-action period is over," said the official.

The group is believed to have about 5000 members, of which more than a third are female. The rebels operate from bases in Iraq and Turkey and rarely have contact with their families or the outside world. The rebel said: "We don't live in luxury but we are not hungry either."

The group's leadership is ensconced just below 3000m in the Qandil mountains, close to Iraq's border with Iran, and receives support from the local Kurdish population. The mountain peaks are almost impossible to penetrate for the Turkish military but the civilian population lower down is exposed.

Turkey hints major offensive against PKK in N. Iraq

Turkish Interior Minister has signed a major military operation into Northern Iraq to eradicate camps of outlawed PKK that has stepped up its attacks in Turkish military outposts, killing scores of soldiers.

Turkish Interior Minister Besir Atalay said that camps of the PKK in north of Iraq are unacceptable, according to anadolu Agency.

"They must be destroyed. Turkey is determined to this end," he said.

His remarkes came after the televised interview of Chief of the General Staff who said that Turkey were in the point where word ends.

After meeting with chief editors of several newspapers and news agencies in Istanbul, Atalay said at a news conference, "any country cannot allow camps of a terrorist organization targeting a neighboring country. Constitution of any country cannot allow it. It also contradicts with any international ethic rules or policies. This is what we underlined at the tripartite mechanism meetings with the United States and Iraq."

"We have already made some demands from the United States and Iraq. Now, we expect them to take action," he said.

Democratic solution

"Our security forces will continue launching military operations as long as terrorism exists. We wants a solution under democratic and reasonable processes," he added.

The government was continuing democratization process, Atalay said.

"Democratization will continue. We don't consider a state of emergency. The government is resolute on the matter. We expect the media to show sensitivity on news reports regarding terrorist acts," he said.

Atalay said they also continued international efforts to fight against PKK and the government has been conducting an active foreign policy on the matter with Iraq, Iran, Syria, the United States and the north of Iraq.

"Lucky organization"

While on a television program on Monday evening, the military chief, Ilker Basbug, said: "There are questions as to why the PKK has existed to this day. So, let's reconsider what's happened since 1984. The PKK is a lucky organization."

"Whenever it nears the brink of dissolution, incidents start occurring in its favor. This is an important point,” he said, and complained that the administration in northern Iraq fails to take necessary action against PKK terrorists in its region.," he also said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan described PKK as a lucky organisation.

Most of the PKK's estimated 4,000 fighters are based in the mountains of neighbouring northern Iraq, from where they launch attacks on military targets in southeast Turkey. Washington provides intelligence on PKK movements to Ankara.

Turkey, the United States and European Union list the PKK as a terrorist group.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict since 1984 when PKK occured.

Turkey Considering Forming Special Military Unit To Guard Border, Fight Kurdish Rebels

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkey is working on plans for a specially trained military unit to man troublesome outposts along the Turkish-Iraqi border and fight autonomy-seeking Kurdish rebels, the defense minister said Wednesday.

Turkey has long been considering a professional army to fight the guerrillas of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which has been fighting since 1984 for autonomy for Turkey's Kurds.

Turkey's largely conscript army, made up of young recruits serving an obligatory 15 months, is seen as insufficiently trained to fight the battle-hardened guerrillas.

Many PKK guerrillas shelter in the mountains of neighboring Iraq, crossing the border for hit-and-run assaults. The group is considered a terrorist organization by both the European Union and United States.

The special army would consist of professional soldiers recruited to serve up to 10 years guarding the border with Iraq, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told an opposition party leader Tuesday, according to Turkish media reports.

Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul confirmed the reports, saying his ministry was working on the legal aspects of the plan while the military was finalizing other details.

There was no information on the size of the planned military unit.

Turkey already has tens of thousands of troops deployed along the Iraqi border in addition to a large pro-government militia unit made up of local Kurds.

The government last year initiated more cultural and political rights to Kurds in a bid to reduce support for the rebels in the country's impoverished southeast.

But the PKK recently escalated attacks against troops, killing more than 20 soldiers since June. The rebels accuse Turkey of not establishing dialogue with them or with imprisoned Kurdish rebel chief Abdullah Ocalan and of refusing to declare an unconditional amnesty or allow Kurdish language education in schools.

As many as 40,000 people have died in the fighting since 1984.

Seven soldiers killed as PKK attacks outpost

Six soldiers were killed early yesterday when terrorists from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) attacked an army unit in Hakkari, near the border with Iraq. Another soldier was killed in the Gürpınar district of Van yesterday afternoon when terrorists attacked a military vehicle carrying soldiers near the village of Akdoğu. A large-scale operation was launched in the region in response.

A group of terrorists opened fire at the Hantepe outpost in the Çukurca district early yesterday. Soldiers responded and a clash ensued. Six soldiers died during the hours-long clash while 17 others were wounded. Specially trained commandoes from the Hakkari Mountain and Rangers' Brigade Command's Fatih Military Barracks were mobilized to the region immediately.

Helicopters and ambulances were also sent to the regions for the slain and injured soldiers. Eleven Turkish soldiers were wounded on Monday in the same area when an explosion ripped through their vehicle.

Various political party leaders and civil society organizations condemned the attack yesterday. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan began his speech at his Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) parliamentary group meeting by condemning the terrorist attack. He vowed to fight terrorism to the end. “But the issue is not just related to security. It also has many social and economic dimensions. We have to be in solidarity,” he said. Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu delivered his condolences for the slain soldiers to Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ. Meanwhile, the explosion of two percussion bombs in the eastern province of Van yesterday damaged some shops and caused panic. An investigation was launched into the explosions, which are suspected to have been carried out by the PKK.

Turkey has seen an upsurge in violence since PKK militants called off a 14-month cease-fire at the start of June. Analysts say the PKK’s desire to undermine a referendum democratizing Turkey’s 1982 Constitution, which was drafted shortly after a coup, is responsible for the escalation in violence. Earlier this month an attack on a military outpost left 15 people dead.

The PKK has stepped up its attacks after accusing the government of not being serious about a bid to extend more cultural rights to the country’s Kurds. Most of the PKK’s estimated 4,000 fighters are based in the mountains of neighboring northern Iraq, from where they launch attacks on military targets in southeastern Turkey. Turkey has lost at least 40,000 people in the fight against the outlawed PKK since 1984, when the terrorist organization was set up with the goal of establishing an autonomous Kurdish state in the eastern and southeastern parts of Turkey. The PKK has been declared a terrorist organization by the international community, including the US and the EU.

Prime Minister Erdoğan announced plans last week to create special units to combat the terrorists along the border with Iraq. The plans envisage building 150 new military outposts along the frontier. These units will comprise professional soldiers who will receive a high salary and will be granted a sum in compensation at the end of their service. All soldiers will serve on a voluntary basis and will receive intense and challenging training for several months. They will fight terror using the methods militants in the mountains use. The special units will not act according to a coordinated army mentality but rather will launch surgical strikes according to incoming intelligence. They will remain in the mountains for a long period of time. They will eat and sleep there. In addition to defense, they will also pursue terrorists.

The prime minister’s announcement came in the wake of a bloody PKK assault at a military border unit in late June. Nine soldiers were killed and 14 were wounded when terrorists attacked an army border unit in Hakkari’s Şemdinli district. Two more soldiers were slain in the same area later on in the day by a land mine, bringing the number of soldiers killed in a day to 11. One week after the attack, five people, including the daughter of an army officer, were killed in a roadside bomb attack on a civilian bus transporting military personnel in İstanbul.

PKK chief threatens attacks against tourists in Turkey

The terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has announced a new wave of violence, saying it will be targeting resorts popular with foreign tourists.

The PKK strategy will target major Turkish cities, rather than just army patrols and bases in the Kurdish heartlands. The Daily Telegraph published an interview with PKK commander Murat Karayılan, who said they will now target the metropolises of western Turkey, including those popular with tourists and businessmen, which have occasionally been hit by bombings over the last decade.

A triple bombing struck the resort town of Marmaris in 2006, while a year later a suicide bomber struck a popular shopping street in the capital, Ankara. According to data in the Telegraph, around 2.5 million British tourists visit Turkey each year. The daily also reported that the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office said on Sunday they advised “against all but essential travel” to the Southeast of Turkey due to the “high threat from terrorism.”

Karayılan told the newspaper that the PKK had no other choice following the Turkish military’s campaign in northern Iraq, where the PKK is based. He said the PKK would soon declare “democratic autonomy” in Kurdish regions of southeastern Turkey. “If Turkey does not accept this, it is their problem,” he was quoted as saying in the daily.

Terror kills 4 policemen in Hatay, raises tension in city

CEBRAIL ÇILESIZ HATAY

Four officers were killed in a terrorist attack on a police vehicle in Hatay's Dörtyol district on Monday night, raising the already high tension in the area, while a nationalist group set ablaze the district's pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party's (BDP) office and chanted slogans against the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The PKK is believed to be behind the attack, but the group has not yet claimed responsibility.

The slain police officers were identified as Ali Hacıarap, Hasan Aslan, Emre Yalçınölen and Fatih Yıldız. They died when a group of assailants opened fire on a patrol vehicle they were in on July 27. The terrorists had been driving a stolen vehicle with a fake license plate and opened fire on the police car as it patrolled the city's Özerliçay neighborhood.

Shorty after the attack, tension rose in the city. Some residents who heard that a number of suspects had been detained after the attack gathered in front of the Dörtyol Police Department, demanding that the suspects be handed over to them.

The group, which continued to grow, ignored calls from officials and police officers to disperse. Members of the group described themselves as Idealists, nationalist youths associated with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). The group then marched to the district’s BDP office and set fire to the fourth floor of the building where the BDP office is located. The crowd watched the building burn and chanted slogans against the terrorist PKK.

Hatay residents hung Turkish flags in their windows facing the main street, while security measures in Dörtyol were stepped up. In addition to setting fire to the BDP office late Monday night, the group attacked some stores in the area.

Hasan Dere, a local storeowner whose shop was attacked, said he hoped this would be the last time such an attack occurs in Hatay. “We are brothers. If this ship goes down, we all go down. They burned down my store; what did they get out of that? I hope this does not happen again.”

In an attempt to ease the rising tension, the Hatay Governor’s Office announced that no member of the terrorist organization had been captured and denied claims that the terrorists opened fire on the police department. “The detainees have no links to the attack on police officers. They were released after a brief interrogation,” the office stated.

The governor’s office also called on residents in the city to act with common sense to ensure much-needed calm in Hatay. “We understand the reaction of Hatay residents, but what we are in need of most today is unity and solidarity. We call on our citizens to act with common sense and to display a good example of solidarity,” it said. Hatay residents are still angry about a PKK attack in late May. Seven Turkish soldiers were killed and six others injured in a rocket attack on a naval base in Hatay’s İskenderun district by the PKK on May 31. Terrorist operatives ambushed a military vehicle carrying soldiers for a change of guard duty shortly after midnight.

Terror has been the primary issue of debate in Turkey for the past couple of months. Terrorist attacks that primarily targeted military bases left dozens of security personnel dead and even more wounded. Terror attacks by the terrorist PKK usually take on momentum in the spring and summer months as warmer weather brings increased infiltration of PKK terrorists from the mountains of northern Iraq. Several thousand terrorists are based in the mountains across the border.

For most observers, however, a recent increase in the number of terror attacks is directly linked to the approaching public referendum on the government’s constitutional amendment package. The PKK is known to be staunchly opposed to the package. It increased bloody attacks on the military to urge people to vote against the constitutional changes in the referendum, which is slated for Sept. 12.

A memorial ceremony was held for the slain officers at the Adana Governor’s Office. The ceremony was attended by Interior Minister Beşir Atalay, Gen. Nejat Bek, the commander of the 6th Army Corps and governors of nearby provinces. In a speech he delivered during the ceremony, the minister said: “The governors of nearby provinces are here, and so are [military] commanders and police chiefs. I call on them to clear the Amanos Mountains [of terrorists]. Do whatever you do, but clear the mountains.”

Atalay also expressed sympathy for the families of the fallen officers, saying it is not easy to say farewell to martyrs. “We will bear the grief of seeing martyrs and, when we see them, our determination and decisiveness to fight terrorism will increase. I call on the aggrieved families and the Turkish police force to gain strength and ambition from this. Some are trying to cause us pain and fear. We will never be intimidated,” he added.

In the meantime, one soldier was killed and five others critically injured after a land mine exploded as a military vehicle was traveling in the southern province of Osmaniye. The injured were rushed to the Osmaniye State Hospital. Security measures were heightened in the province after the attack.
