АНКАРА, 21 июня. Премьер-министр Турции Реджеп Тайип Эрдоган заявил о намерении властей Турции активизировать борьбу с приверженцами запрещенной Курдской рабочей партии (КРП). Как сообщает радио «Свобода», к границе с Ираком, где пытаются укрыться курдские боевики, стягивается тяжелая техника, танки, артиллерия. По сведениям из военных источников, в районе проведения операции вводится комендантский час.

«Террористы утонут в собственной крови. Предательские нападения не разрушат наше братство. Турция обладает правом защиты своего единства и целостности. Наше государство без колебаний будет продолжать борьбу с терроризмом до конца», — заявил прибывший в район столкновений Реджеп Тайип Эрдоган.

Сообщается также, что в результате очередного столкновения сепаратистов с турецкими военными в провинции Элязыг погиб один военнослужащий и трое ранены. Таким образом, за последние двое суток число потерь среди военнослужащих достигло двенадцати.

Решение о проведении военной операции вызвало массовые демонстрации протеста среди местного населения. На юго-востоке Турции на улицы городов вышли сотни курдов. В городе Диарбакыр, где проживает курдское население, были сожжены несколько офисов и магазинов.

Turkey uses Israeli-made drones against rebels in Iraq: army

The Turkish army has begun using Israeli-made unmanned aircraft to monitor Kurdish rebel movements in neighbouring Iraq, the Anatolia news agency reported Monday, quoting the army chief.

"In the past 10 days, we have started using our Heron systems... the surveillance systems we bought from Israel, in the north of Iraq," General Ilker Basbug said in Canakkale, northwestern Turkey, according to Anatolia.

The drones are being used "at a certain distance in the north of Iraq in coordination with the Americans," Basbug told reporters, adding that the aircraft were operated "by our own personnel."

There has been media speculation that the drones were idle because Israeli operators left Turkey amid the crisis between the two countries over Israel's May 31 raid on Gaza-bound aid ships, in which nine Turks were killed.

The Turkish army is fighting surging violence by the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which uses rear bases in neighbouring northern Iraq as a launching pad for attacks against Turkish targets across the border.

Twelve soldiers were killed in PKK attacks over the weekend, most of them when rebels assaulted a border unit at the Iraqi frontier early Saturday.

Basbug played down suggestions that an intelligence failure had led to the attack, which prompted a Turkish air raid on PKK hideouts in Iraq.

The 2005 drone contract was part of an 185-million-dollar project that involved the manufacture of 10 aircraft, surveillance equipment and ground control stations by a joint venture led by Israel Aerospace Industries.

Turkey has received six aircraft and the delivery of the remaining four are expected in June or July, according to Turkish officials.

В результате нападения курдских сепаратистов на военный патруль и блокпост на востоке Турции погибли двое турецких военнослужащих и один мирный житель, сообщает агентство AFP со ссылкой на местные СМИ. Еще шестеро человек, в том числе трое гражданских лиц, получили ранения. О потерях среди нападавших ничего не сообщается.

Инцидент произошел в четверг, 24 июня, в округе Элязыг провинции Анатолия.

4 июня сепаратистская Рабочая партия Курдистана (РПК) объявила об окончании одностороннего прекращения огня, длившегося около года, и активизировала операции против турецких вооруженных сил. Только за последние несколько дней на востоке Турции жертвами атак курдских сепаратистов стали 19 турецких военнослужащих и двое мирных жителей.

Курды борются за создание собственного независимого государства на востоке Турции уже около 25 лет. Число жертв конфликта составляет приблизительно 40 тысяч человек.

Turkish troops kill Kurd rebel, seize explosives

Ankara: Turkish security forces killed a Kurdish militant and seized explosives on a passenger train amid mounting Kurdish separatist violence, the army and media reports said yesterday.

The rebel was killed overnight after paramilitary troops found a group of rebels from the separatist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in a mountainous area in the eastern province of Kars, the army said in a statement.

Several militants were wounded but managed to flee, Kars Governor Ahmet Kara told Anatolia news agency, adding that the security operation in the region continued Saturday.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Ankara and much of the international community, has this month dramatically stepped up its violent 26-year campaign for self-rule in the Kurdish-majority southeast.

In a separate incident, security forces Friday seized a bag containing about eight kilogrammes (17 pounds) of plastic explosives and detained a man in an operation at a train station in the eastern city of Malatya, the military said.

The bag was discovered inside a passenger train, according to Anatolia.

The army did not say whether the suspect was linked to the PKK, but it announced the incident in a section of its website listing operations against the group. After the suspect’s initial interrogation, paramilitary troops stopped and searched another train in neighbouring Sivas province, Anatolia said.

Turkish warplanes bomb northern Iraq

ARBIL, Iraq (AFP) – Turkish warplanes bombed northern Iraq on Monday, the rebel Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and an Iraqi Kurdish official said, as Ankara stepped up its riposte to increased fighting with the rebels.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the air raids, which began at midday (0900 GMT) and targeted the Sidakan district of Arbil province in the mountainous northeast of Iraq.

"So far they have resulted in fires breaking out in forests and fields in the mountains," Sidakan district commissioner Ahmed Qadr told AFP.

PKK spokesman Ahmed Denis said: "The bombing targeted Kurdish nomads in the border area. We don't yet know the extent of the damage or casualties."

Turkey has launched repeated air raids and two ground incursions against suspected PKK rear-bases in the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq in recent weeks.

They came as the Turkish army suffered its deadliest 48 hours in two years in its battle with the PKK.

On June 19-20, the rebels killed 12 Turkish soldiers in multiple attacks inside Turkey prompting Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to pledge to fight the PKK "to the end".

Three more soldiers and a civilian were killed in further rebel attacks on June 21 and 24.

And on June 22, a PKK splinter group bombed a Turkish military bus in Istanbul, killing five soldiers and a 17-year-old girl.

Blacklisted as a terrorist group by Ankara and much of the international community, the PKK took up arms for Kurdish self-rule in southeastern Turkey in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed some 45,000 lives, according to the Turkish army.

Kurd conflict comes back to haunt Turkey before polls

CUKURCA, Turkey (Reuters) – Helicopter gunships clatter above the plunging ravines on the Turkish-Iraqi frontier, scouring the mountainsides for Kurdish rebel fighters.

On the twisting roads, military vehicles run the risk of roadside bombs or ambush as they ferry troops to checkpoints and border posts.

Sometimes Turkish forces go further, launching airstrikes against militant bases in northern Iraq, or ordering troops to cross the border in hot pursuit of guerrilla raiding parties. On Thursday night, warplanes struck rebels in the mountains.

Barely a year after Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan announced a new deal between the state and its Kurdish minority, hopes of an end to Turkey's decades-long conflict have been wrecked by an upsurge in violence in the Kurdish southeast.

Families in the dusty mountain border town of Cukurca have grown used to waking every night to the booming sound of artillery shelling and mortar fire echoing in the surrounding hills as troops and separatist guerrillas trade fire.

"People didn't expect peace to come at once, so now we are used to the violence again," said a man in his 30s, who didn't want to be named for fear of offending either side.

In recent weeks, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) separatist group has stepped up attacks on the military, having formerly ended a 14-month-old ceasefire in June.

More than 80 soldiers have been killed so far this year -- already more than the total in 2009.

PRESSURE TO RETALIATE

Grieving mothers hold pictures of baby-faced men in uniform, while news channels convey a sense of national mourning in their coverage of religious services for the dead soldiers.

Such is the anger over the deaths of soldiers that government officials have been attacked at funerals, where crowds wave Turkish flags and chant nationalist slogans.

Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, the AK Party, had gambled last year on improving Kurdish rights, hoping that this "democratic opening" would help wind down a 26-year-old conflict that has wiped out around 40,000 lives.

Now under pressure to respond to escalating PKK attacks, the government says the rebels will "drown in their own blood," and thousands of elite troops have been deployed along the border.

The counter-insurgency operations are helped by intelligence sharing with Iraqi and U.S. military authorities, though sometimes Iraq protests over violations of its sovereignty.

The violence could handicap Erdogan's attempt to form a single-party government for a third consecutive term, with a general election now 12 months away or less.

Seeking to ease Kurdish grievances, Erdogan last year lifted some restrictions on cultural and political rights, reversing aggressive state policies drafted after a military coup in the 1980s that only hardened support for the PKK.

The moves won applause among liberals and Kurds for breaking taboos on the Kurdish problem, which has drained hundreds of billions of dollars from the Turkish state.

While reforms were required for European Union entry, the government is unlikely to make more concessions with an election coming, having seen the strength of a nationalist backlash.

Images of PKK members receiving a heroes' welcome after returning to Turkey under a pilot amnesty plan riled public opinion in wealthier western Turkey, where many people are indifferent to the woes of the poor, far-flung southeast.

"To solve the Kurdish problem, you need to be brave and this government was not brave enough," said Arif Koparan, head of the Trade and Business Association of the nearby town of Hakkari.

"The government promised many things to the Kurds, but in the end they were just words. Erdogan was too afraid of losing voters so the process never took off," Koparan said.

CRACKDOWN

Kurds say that while the government in Ankara spoke of granting reforms, security forces in the southeast were systematically cracking down on Kurdish politicians, detaining hundreds, including mayors, for suspected links to the PKK.

Prosecutors have continued imposing long prison sentences on Kurdish journalists and on children involved in stone throwing despite promises to ease harsh anti-terrorism laws that have been criticized by international human rights groups.

"There is still a military mentality in the Turkish state," said Hakkari mayor Fadil Bedirhanoglu, of the Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party.

Bedirhanoglu said some 2,000 of his party members have been detained in recent months, and only a few have been charged.

Bedirhanoglu said Kurdish demands, far from calling for independence, are reasonable; they include amending the constitution to recognize a Kurdish identity in Turkey and allowing state schools to teach in Kurdish.

Bedirhanoglu cited a resistance to change from the "Deep State" -- a nebulous coalition of interests embracing the army, establishment politicians and judges.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist group by Ankara, the United States and the EU, but analysts fear the conflict and neglect has resulted in a dangerous ethnic fault line.

Many in the in violence-hit towns and villages in the southeast see the PKK as the defender of Kurdish rights, as their hopes in the reform process have faded.

In the village of Yuksekova, graffiti scrawled on store shutters and walls of dilapidated houses praises jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan.

"If we live and breathe it's because of the PKK," said Dilges, a skinny 18-year-old with braces from the village where unemployment stands at 70 percent.
